As her fiftieth birthday approached, Letitia Shelton set herself an audacious goal: cycle 6,100 kilometres across the United States to raise funds for Fiji’s young people.
After a year of gruelling preparation, she spent seven weeks facing mountains, headwinds, exhaustion, laughter, tears and unexpected friendships alongside twenty-one strangers.

I applaud the courage of the sex workers who have turned up to share their story and be seen. This book gives an inside look into the lives of 17 people and what led them onto the streets of Fiji to sell their bodies. You will read about the challenges they have had to overcome. Many of them are still walking through the struggles today.
My hope is that this book will give you greater empathy and compassion for those who find themselves working on the streets or in brothels, many of them just wanting to survive in life. Each person in this book is truly a survivor, may our hearts be changed by what we read and may it move us to take action to help the most vulnerable in our society.
There is a lot of awareness around the abuse of women, it is an epidemic. Although not as prevalent, but still very damaging is the abuse of men. This book uncovers a topic that is hardly ever addressed. Men are abused, sadly the majority of their abusers are also men. This book shines a light on the darkness that men are enduring generally from a young age. The Pacific Islands will never heal unless we come to terms with the “cancer” of abuse that is destroying society.
Due to the courage of each man in this book to tell his story, silence is being disrupted, shame is being lifted and religion is being broken. This book brings to the surface a lot of the unspoken reality that remains hidden. Change will never happen unless we first understand the problem and then move forward with solutions. May this book be part of the solution.

Evil exists in all our communities, and Fiji is not exempt. Amid the beautiful tropical islands, there is a dark underbelly of abuse, violence, rape, and incest that continues to breed in silence. Fiji has created a “taboo” culture where these issues are not freely acknowledged, spoken about, and dealt with, but rather swept under the mat to not bring shame to the community.
Due to the courage of ten women, this book disrupts the silence. Many of these women have spoken up and shared their story for the first time. This book is not easy to read, but it is essential in understanding the suffering that goes on. It is time to speak up and respond with hearts of compassion and justice to bring an end to the violence and abuse of women in Fiji.
