Does it mean that as the man you get the final word? You must be obeyed by all in the house? That everyone must serve you?
I agree with Ephesians 5:23 that man is the head of the home. I have no problem with this at all. What I do have a problem with is that Christian men have used this verse as a weapon to abuse, to control, to oppress & to humiliate. Imagine being beaten by your husband while he quotes this verse? This is a pure form of evil and a misrepresentation of the Word.
The Greek word for ‘head’ used here in Ephesians is the word Kephale, it means “source or one who goes ahead.” It implies serving and protection. If Paul had wanted ‘head’ to mean ruler, he would have used the word ‘arche’ which we find in archangel or archenemy. Paul calls us to be great through serving. If every husband lived to serve and protect his wife and family, our society would be remarkably different. And if they took it another step further to protect & serve their communities, maybe we could even eradicate abuse???
I spend a lot of time in Fiji where it is very much a male-dominated culture. By & large the church perpetuates this culture instead of promoting kingdom culture and where pornography rules the day. Is it any wonder that 2 in 3 women are abused here??? This nation is crying out for men who will love, serve & protect – not dominate, demean & control. Men, the health of your family and community is a reflection of you and what you believe your role is.
Jesus is calling you to serve & protect in order to build flourishing homes. This could change the course of a nation for good. We need you men! Let’s work together (men & women hand in hand) to create a healthier nation!! Thank you to the men who are leading the way in this!
