“I’ve healed from the trauma of being raped but not from the trauma of the silence of my family.” At the age of 4 Pita was raped by his 15 year old next door neighbour. Unfortunately, when he told the adults in his family they all pretended like nothing ever happened. They swept it under the rug. The culture of shame & silence won the day while Pita continued to suffer. Pretending that something never happened never brings healing. It only allows the wound to grow deeper and more damage is done.
Jeremiah 6 addresses this very issue.
My people are broken—shattered!— and they put on Band-Aids, Saying, ‘It’s not so bad. You’ll be just fine.’ But things are not ‘just fine’!
Jeremiah 6:13-15 MSG
You won’t be fine. Covering up a situation with a temporary band-aid will never bring godly solutions. In order for our lives & communities to heal we must come face to face with the real issues, with the depth of pain and heartbreak. There will be weeping and deep sorrow. We may lose loved ones and family members, but we will heal and dance again!! No more covering up!! Let truth prevail.
It’s time to rip off the band-aid and bring it out into the open.
